Today, we explore the other two historic cities of the Kathmandu valley, Bhaktapur and Patan.
Patan Durbar Square
Patan or Lalitpur houses one of three durbar square ( Palace complex) in the valley, the Patan Durbar square. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The square is often deemed as the finest example of Newari architecture. The ancient royal palace of Patan sits facing the amusing Durbar square. The concentrated mass of temples surrounding the palace is as visually appealing as it is architecturally magnificent, especially up close. These temples were constructed mostly during the Malla period ( 14th to 18th centuries). The Patan royal palace houses a couple of museums, which are open every day. Some temples are under reconstruction and renovation after the 2015 earthquake. Patan Durbar square is about 7 km away from Kathmandu Durbar square. Patan is a city of importance for both Hinduism and Buddhism. It has 55 major temples and 136 important courtyards, most of these structures are in or nearby Durbar square.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
The whole complex is a museum of medieval Nepalese architecture and art. The palace complex has many colossal pagoda temples, sculptures, and wood-carved establishments. Bhaktapur durbar square is a conglomeration of Shikhara-style and pagoda-style temples spread around the 55-window palace made of wood and brick. These are the major attractions of Bhaktapur Durbar square:
The 55 Window Palace
This is the most dominating structure in the main durbar complex, Built in the 15th century, this marvel of wood-crafting is a sight not to miss.
Golden Gate
This leads you to the palace and is an excellent work of a craftsman. One can only wonder and admire the complex level of artistry.
Lion's Gate
On either side of the gate, two enigmatic Hindu deities stand proud and fierce. Legend says the artisans who built the gate had their hands cut off because the king didn’t want them building a structure like this anywhere else.
Nyatapola Temple
Most probably one of the most iconic temples in Nepal, Naytapola temple s a five-storied pagoda temple of absolute architectural perfection and excellent craftsmanship. This temple has stood the test of time, it was left untouched by the 2015 earthquake among many others Nepal has seen in the past centuries. The temple is dedicated to the tantric goddess of success and supreme power, goddess Sidhilaxmi. Other significant sites include the pottery square where you can try your hand at traditional pottery that Bhaktapur is so famous for, the medieval alleys with deep wells and many other cultural points, Vatsala temple, Bhairavnath temple, and the Dattatreya square among others.
