Everest Three High Passes Trek Overview:

Everest Base Camp—Three High Passes Trek—20 Days offers an opportunity to visit Everest Base Camp while also exploring the remote and stunning backcountry of the Khumbu Region. The route is challenging, crossing three high-altitude passes, but the reward is breathtaking views of four of the world’s ten highest peaks. The trek in Lukla follows the traditional EBC route until Namche, where it diverges.

After trekking up the Bhote Koshi canyon, you’ll cross the Renjo La pass at 5,360 meters, entering the Gokyo Valley with spectacular views from Renjo La and Gokyo Ri of Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest.

After resting in Gokyo, you’ll descend the massive Ngozumpa Glacier and cross the Cho La pass at 5,400 meters, enjoying views of Ama Dablam on the way to Gorekshep and Everest Base Camp.

The route then diverges again, crossing the Kongma La pass at 5,535 meters, offering incredible views of Cholatse, Pokalde, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam. You’ll descend into the Niyang Khola valley, stopping at Chukkung, the base for climbs to Island Peak. The final leg follows the traditional descent back to Lukla via Tengboche and Namche.

The EBC Three High Passes Journey is known as one of the best outdoor adventures, perfect for trekking enthusiasts worldwide. This trek takes you across three major high passes in Sagarmatha National Park (Khumbu region), all over 5,000 meters in the Himalayan range.

These passes are Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,368 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m), offering incredible views of the Everest Himalayan core and frozen lakes.

After preparing for the Three Passes with Everest Base Camp trek, you’ll fly to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. The route gradually leads you through suspension bridges to the bustling town of Namche Bazaar. Here, you can choose between a clockwise or counterclockwise route. For novice trekkers needing acclimatization, the counterclockwise route is recommended, and this is the path we follow in our itinerary.

The Everest Three High Passes Trekking Package starts with a tour of the historic Kathmandu Valley, where you'll visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The following day, you’ll fly to Lukla to begin your trek. Along the way, you’ll explore ancient holy shrines and the remnants of courts from the Middle Ages.

This trek is one of the most popular in Nepal, and Adventure Club Trek has carefully crafted the itinerary to include the best teahouses and lodges for your meals and accommodations.

Our experienced Sherpa trekking guides and porters will accompany you, ensuring your safety and comfort while addressing any challenges that may arise. Adventure Club Trek is excited to support you on this incredible journey into the Himalayas.

How Difficult Is the Everest Three High Passes Trek?

The Everest High Passes Trek, also known as the Three Passes Trek or Everest Base Camp via Three Passes Trek, is one of the most challenging treks offered by Adventure Club for hardcore trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. This trek completes a full circuit of the highlands of the Everest Valley, crossing the three difficult passes of Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La before reaching Everest Base Camp. It's a demanding journey, taking you through remote and rugged mountain terrain. To undertake this trek, you need to be in excellent physical condition and have significant experience in the Himalayas. We recommend that trekkers first attempt the Everest Base Camp Trek or Gokyo Lake Trek before trying this one. However, suppose you are a seasoned trekker or have tackled climbs like Kilimanjaro. In that case, you are well-prepared for this adventure.

Is there electricity and WIFI access on the trek?

During your trek to Everest Base Camp, you’ll have access to electricity for recharging devices like phones, laptops, and iPads. This is provided through micro-hydropower and solar panels, typically available for a fee. However, Wi-Fi access is limited along the trail, especially after Namche Bazaar. The only places offering free Wi-Fi are Starbucks Coffee in Lukla and Everest Bakery in Namche. As you ascend to higher elevations, internet services become available for a fee, with prices increasing the further you go.

After breakfast, we depart from the bustling town of Namche Bazaar. We begin by gradually ascending the hill ridge of Namche, often joining a line of fellow trekkers on this popular trail. Once we reach the ridge, the path becomes easier and more enjoyable as we continue. After walking about 2.5 miles, we arrive at Kyangjuma, then descend along a rocky trail to Phunki Tenga, where we stop for lunch. Afterward, we cross a bridge and start our uphill climb towards Tengboche. Overnight in Tengboche.

The cultural atmosphere of the monastery is beautifully complemented by the inspiring presence of Mount Ama Dablam. After enjoying breakfast, we prepare to depart. The trail ahead is a mix of switchbacks, with both uphill and downhill sections. Along the way, we pass through some remarkable Sherpa highlands, including Deboche and Milingo. Eventually, we arrive in Pangboche, home to the famous Pangboche Monastery, one of the oldest in the Everest region. We stop for lunch in Somare before continuing along the Imja Khola River towards Dingboche, a charming small town where we will spend the night.

  • MealsBreakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Max. Altitude4,360m/14,305ft

The journey begins after having breakfast at Dingboche and exploring the mani stone. We have a short trek today, consisting of just 7 km as we need to acclimatize to the alpine altitude. Chhukung is also a gateway to the Island peak climbing trip. We arrive early and take a rest with lunch. Overnight in Chhukung.

  • AccommodationGuesthoue/Teahouse
  • MealsBreakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Max. Altitude4,730m

Before tackling the challenging pass, we dedicate a day to Chhukung for acclimatization activities. After a hearty breakfast, we begin our ascent of Chhukung Ri, which stands at an altitude of 5,550 meters. The climb is demanding, but the breathtaking views of Mt. Cho Oyu, Pumori, Lhotse Wall, Makalu, and Baruntse make it all worthwhile. This hike helps us prepare for the long and technical Kongma La pass the next day. After descending from Chhukung Ri, we have lunch and take some time to rest. If you prefer a longer hike, we can pack a lunch to enjoy on the trail. We turn in early to ensure we’re ready for an early start tomorrow.

  • Max. Altitude5,546m/18,196ft

We start our trek very early today to reach the highest point of the entire journey, Kongma La Pass (5,535m/18,160ft). We have two options: we can either take the trail over the hill northwest of Chhukung, crossing the Nuptse Glacier moraines, or we can walk back to Bibre and follow the path above the Niyang Khola. The top of the pass is marked by cairns and Buddhist prayer flags. The final descent from the pass is the most challenging part of today’s trek. After crossing the moraine on the other side, the trail heads north through the Khumbu Glacier, leading us to Lobuche. We will spend the night in Lobuche.

Note: Trekking through Kongma La is optional. If you prefer to skip the strenuous pass, we can go directly from Chhukung to Lobuche instead.

  • AccommodationGuesthoue/Teahouse

  • Max. Altitude4910m/16105ft

After breakfast in Lobuche, we begin our journey, which becomes more challenging as we gain altitude and navigate a rugged, icy trail that can be slippery. The snowy peaks of Pumori and Nuptse add to the breathtaking scenery. After crossing the Lobuche Pass, we arrive at Gorakshep, the last inhabited settlement on this route. We check into our hotel and have lunch, but our day’s adventure isn’t over yet. Despite the short distance (3.4 km), the trek to Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,599ft) is demanding due to the thin air and lower oxygen levels. Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, we take time to capture group photos and admire the majestic summit of Mount Everest (8,848.86m). After about half an hour, we retrace our steps back down to Gorakshep.

  • Max. Altitude5180m/16990ft

We begin our trek to Kala Patthar (5,545m/18,193ft) early in the morning to witness the first light of the sun illuminating Mt. Everest. Be prepared for trekking in the dark and cold temperatures, which can vary depending on the season, and for the possibility of chilly winds, which are common in this region. As we ascend, familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Everest, and Nuptse rise majestically around us. After several hours of climbing, we reach the summit of Kala Patthar, where the close-up view of Mt. Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks is truly breathtaking. We take time to soak in the stunning panorama before descending to Lobuche for the night.

  • AccommodationGuesthoue/Teahouse
  • MealsBreakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Max. Altitude4910m/16105ft

Our adventure continues as we head out after breakfast. We descend through Lobuche Kharka, where the path leads us past the memorials of Everest climbers who lost their lives during their attempts to conquer the mountain. These tombstones serve as poignant reminders of the challenges faced by those who came before us. Leaving the main trail above Thukla, we take the path toward Cho La. The route is both exciting and rewarding, with rocky boulders adding to the challenge. Along the way, we are captivated by the stunning view of Cholatse's North Face before arriving at Dzongla.

  • Max. Altitude4,830m/15,847ft

Today marks another thrilling and challenging day as we cross the 5,300-meter-high Cho La Pass in the Khumbu region. We set out early in the morning, trekking up a rugged and steep trail. The glacial moraines add an extra layer of difficulty, requiring caution, especially when navigating the steep and slippery sections where the risk of crevasses is present. The Cho La Pass offers breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and the surrounding Everest Himalayan range. As we descend, it’s important to move carefully, being mindful of the slippery terrain and the potential for falling rocks. After crossing the challenging icy path, we arrive in Thangnak. Once there, we can stretch our muscles and, if time permits, extend our hike to Gokyo Lake.

Note: Crampons are recommended for this trek and can be purchased or rented in Kathmandu.

We have a relaxing day in the Gokyo Valley, so breakfast will be served a bit later. Afterward, we'll explore the stunning landscape and the impressive turquoise Gokyo Lake, the third of the five lakes in the area, measuring 43 meters deep, 1000 meters in length, and 855 meters in width. For those looking for an additional adventure, there's the option to hike up Gokyo Ri, an excellent viewpoint of Mount Everest, Makalu, and the surrounding peaks. If you choose to hike Gokyo Ri, be sure to bring a packed lunch. We’ll turn in early tonight, as another big challenge awaits us the next day—crossing another high pass.

The third high pass in the Khumbu region lies ahead of us. As with the previous passes, we start our trek early in the morning after breakfast, with a packed lunch in hand. The trail is steep and rocky, with the altitude adding to the challenge. Renjo La, at 5,360 meters, offers the best panoramic views of the Everest Himalayan range, including Makalu, Tengi, Ragi Tau, the Rolwaling range, and Gyachhung Kang. Near the pass, you'll find a beautiful frozen lake. The descent is steep and slippery, and porters often use fixed ropes for safety. After navigating this challenging section, we reach Lunde, where we take a short break for tea or coffee before continuing to Marlung.

  • AccommodationGuesthoue/Teahouse
  • MealsBreakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Max. Altitude4210m

After enjoying a wonderful breakfast at Marlung, we packed our bags and began our descent via Taranga. Along the way, we encounter rich cultural attractions, including monasteries like Kyaro Gumba, before reaching the picturesque village of Thame, situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Thame is home to one of the most renowned monasteries in the Everest region, where we’ll stop for lunch. Afterward, we cross the river and continue our journey through Samde and Phurte, eventually arriving back in the bustling town of Namche Bazaar. With this, we complete the circuit in the Khumbu region.

As we walk past Phakding, we gradually make our way to a lunch stop near Nursing. From there, we continue to the final point of our trek—Lukla. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a light celebration with the team to mark the success of our trek. Overnight in Lukla.

Useful Info

Lukla Flight Information & Delays

Flights to Lukla are closely influenced by both seasonal air traffic and mountain weather, so your flight arrangements can differ depending on when you travel.

During the peak trekking months of March, April, May, September, October, and November, Lukla flights generally operate from Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport rather than Kathmandu. Ramechhap is around 4–5 hours by road from Kathmandu, although the journey can take longer depending on traffic and road conditions. During the quieter months, flights normally operate from Kathmandu.

The exact departure airport is determined by the airlines and current flight operations. Weather can also change quickly in the Everest region, and delays or cancellations are possible even when conditions are clear in Kathmandu.

For this reason, we strongly recommend keeping 1–2 extra days in your Nepal itinerary, particularly before your international flight home. This gives you a practical buffer if your Lukla flight is delayed or cancelled and helps avoid the risk of missing your onward flight. If a flight disruption occurs, our team will monitor the situation and help arrange the most practical available alternative.

Please reread.

  • Baggage Allowance: Lukla flights allow 10 kg of checked baggage plus 5 kg of hand carry per passenger per flight. Excess baggage may incur additional charges and is subject to the airline's weight restrictions.
  • Helicopter Options: If your regular flight is cancelled due to weather and you choose to travel by helicopter, the fare is USD 550 per person, or USD 3,200 for a private helicopter charter.
  • Flight Ticket Refund: When a Lukla flight is cancelled due to weather, the airline ticket is normally fully refunded. We will apply the refunded flight amount toward the helicopter cost, so you only pay the remaining difference per passenger.

Weather & Best Time to Trek

The best seasons for the Everest Base Camp trek are spring and autumn, particularly March to May and late September to November. These months generally offer more stable weather, clearer mountain views, and good trail conditions. October and November are especially popular, so teahouses and flights can be busy.

Winter (December to February) brings colder temperatures and freezing conditions at higher elevations, but clear skies can provide excellent mountain views. Some lodges operate throughout the season, although facilities are more limited.

The monsoon months of June to August bring rain to lower sections and can affect flights to Lukla. The Everest region receives less rain than many parts of Nepal, but cloud and wet trails can still make travel less predictable.

Mountain weather can change quickly in any season, so flexibility remains important.

What is the accommodation like during the trek?

In Kathmandu, you will stay in a comfortable 3-star hotel. During the trek, we use welcoming local teahouses and guesthouses along the route, giving you a chance to experience the simple, friendly style of accommodation found in the Everest region.

Rooms are normally twin-sharing, with another trekker of the same gender. Private rooms can be requested for an additional fee, although availability becomes limited at higher altitudes, particularly during the busy spring and autumn seasons.

Up to Namche Bazaar, the teahouses we select generally offer rooms with attached bathrooms. Above Namche, accommodation becomes more basic, with shared toilets and washing facilities. Hot showers are available at many lodges, although availability and heating methods, including gas, solar power, or heated water, vary with altitude and lodge.

A hot shower usually costs around USD 3–5, with prices generally increasing as you climb higher. After a long day on the trail, many trekkers find it well worth the extra few dollars.

What is the food like on the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included during the trek. Breakfast is also included at your Kathmandu hotel, while lunch and dinner in Kathmandu are normally arranged separately unless stated in your itinerary. We also host welcome and farewell dinners for our guests.

During the trek, breakfast and dinner are served at the teahouse where you stay, while lunch is usually taken at a teahouse along the trail. Menus offer a surprisingly wide choice, including eggs, toast, porridge, momos, dal bhat, noodles, pasta, soup, fried rice, and chow mein. Dal bhat, made with rice, lentils, and vegetables, is particularly popular because it is filling and provides a good source of energy for long trekking days.

We recommend choosing freshly cooked vegetarian meals at higher elevations. Meat is transported into the mountains from lower areas, and storage conditions can vary, so many experienced trekkers prefer to avoid it above Namche.

Drinking Water on the Everest Base Camp Trek

Drinking water is not included with your meals, but safe drinking-water options are available throughout the trek. You can refill your bottle at teahouses or designated water sources and treat the water before drinking. Water purification tablets, a sterilizing pen, or a reliable water filter are all practical options.

Bottled and boiled water are also available at teahouses, but the price increases as you gain altitude because everything has to be transported into the mountains. Expect to pay roughly USD 1 per litre at lower elevations, with prices reaching around USD 4 or more per litre higher on the trail. Bringing a reusable bottle and treating refill water is usually the more economical and environmentally responsible option.

Electricity, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks in the Everest region

Electricity is available at most teahouses, although charging becomes more limited and expensive as you climb higher. Expect to pay around USD 2–6 to charge a phone, camera, or power bank, depending on the location. We recommend bringing a 20,000 mAh power bank.

Cold temperaturescan drain batteries quickly, so keep your phone, camera batteries, and power bank warm, especially overnight.

Wi-Fi is available at many teahouses, but it becomes slower and less reliable at higher elevations. Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) are the main mobile networks in Nepal. Both work reasonably well around Lukla and Namche, while coverage becomes less reliable higher on the trail.

We recommend buying a local SIM/eSIM in Kathmandu and downloading important maps and documents for offline use before starting the trek.

Equipment and Packing List

Packing the right gear will help you stay comfortable throughout your Langtang Valley Trek. Keep your luggage light and bring only the essentials. If you hire a porter, we recommend packing no more than 10 kg (22 lbs) per person in your duffel bag.

Altitude Sickness: Symptoms & What We Do

Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 3,000 meters, regardless of age or fitness. Common symptoms include headache, tiredness, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, and disturbed sleep. Our itinerary allows time for gradual acclimatization, and our guides keep a close eye on how each trekker is feeling.

If you develop symptoms, we do not encourage you to simply push on. Depending on their severity, our guide may recommend resting at the same altitude or descending. Worsening or severe symptoms require immediate descent and medical attention.

Some trekkers consider acetazolamide (Diamox) for altitude sickness. If you are considering it, speak with your doctor before the trek to determine whether it is suitable for you.

We require all trekkers to have travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation up to the maximum altitude of their itinerary. Some Everest itineraries reach over 5,500 meters, particularly when Kala Patthar is included.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most foreign nationals require a tourist visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a Nepal tourist visa before your trip from a Nepalese embassy or consulate or on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and selected official land border entry points.

Please note that nationals of Afghanistan, Iraq, Cameroon, Ghana, Somalia, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Palestine, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Liberia are not eligible for a visa on arrival. Travelers from these countries must obtain a visa from a Nepalese Embassy or Consulate before traveling to Nepal.

Tourist visas are also available at selected official land border entry points into Nepal.

To obtain a tourist visa, you will need:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your date of arrival.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph (digital or printed).
  • The applicable visa fee.

Tourist Visa Fees

15 Days (Multiple Entry)USD 30
30 Days (Multiple Entry)USD 50
90 Days (Multiple Entry)USD 125

To save time on arrival, we recommend completing the online visa application before your trip and presenting the confirmation receipt at the immigration counter.

Our Trekking Guides/Leaders

Here at Adventure Club, our staff is like family. We only use locals to support their communities and train our staff rigorously to be the best they can be—for you!

  •  Full first-aid training
  • Guide Training (trekking)
  • English and other common languages (as requested)
  • Village and Land Conservation
  • Mountaineering (for specialty expeditions or climbing treks)

All our guides are highly trained in all aspects of trekking, conversation, first-aid, and emergency evacuation. They are all very professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about tourism. They are local guides, and their English is sometimes limited to trek-related topics. They know how to facilitate running a smooth and safe trip while appreciating the beauty of the Himalayan world.

Porter Welfare

Our porters play an important role in making your trek safe and enjoyable. We ask all trekkers to treat them with kindness and respect throughout the journey. To protect their health and well-being, each porter carries luggage for a maximum of two trekkers, with a combined weight limit of 20 kg (44 lbs). We kindly ask you to keep your duffel bag within 10 kg (22 lbs) per person.

At Adventure Club Trek, we provide our porters with fair wages, proper clothing and equipment, meals, and accommodation during the trek. If a porter becomes ill or is injured, we ensure they receive the necessary medical care, including emergency evacuation when required. We also follow the guidelines of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) and are committed to providing safe and fair working conditions for our trekking staff.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is required for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Before you travel, please make sure your policy covers trekking in Nepal up to 6000 meters (19,404 ft) and includes emergency helicopter evacuation.

We recommend that your insurance policy cover the following:

  • Emergency helicopter evacuation
  • Medical treatment and hospitalization
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage
  • Personal accident and liability

Please carry a printed or digital copy of your insurance policy, including your policy number and emergency contact details, during the trek.

In the event of an emergency, our guides will arrange the necessary rescue and medical assistance. However, the cost of evacuation and medical treatment is the responsibility of your insurance provider or yourself if your policy does not provide adequate coverage.

Recommended Travel Insurance Providers

There are many travel insurance companies that offer coverage for trekking in Nepal. When choosing a policy, make sure it covers high-altitude trekkingemergency helicopter evacuation, and medical expenses.

Some well-known travel insurance providers include:

America

Canada

Europe

Asia & Middle East

Australia

Please note that the availability of these providers may vary by country. Before purchasing a policy, carefully check that it covers trekking in Nepal up to the maximum altitude of your itinerary and includes emergency helicopter evacuation.

Adventure Club Trek is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of the companies listed above. They are provided only as examples of insurers that many travelers have used for trekking holidays. You are welcome to choose any insurance provider that offers the coverage you need.

Group Size & Guide Support

We keep our scheduled trekking groups to a maximum of 14 travelers, allowing our guides to give everyone personal attention throughout the trek.

Our licensed local guides and porters are assigned according to the group size and itinerary. Since everyone walks at a different pace, our guides manage the group so that nobody feels unnecessarily rushed or left behind.

Solo travelers can join a scheduled small-group departure or choose a private trek. We can also arrange customized departures for larger private groups on request.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Nepal, but it is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation for good service. If you are happy with the support you receive, you may choose to tip your guide, porter, driver, or hotel staff at the end of the trip.

There is no fixed amount, and how much you tip is entirely up to you. Our guides and porters are paid fairly for their work, so tips are never expected. However, they are always appreciated as a gesture of thanks for their hard work and dedication.

Once in a lifetime trip made possible with these fantastic guides!

This once-in-a-lifetime trip was made possible through the hard work that Birendra and his guides - So Nam, Kali, and Bhim put in into looking after us and arranging everything.
I was the group organizer for my group and my job was made easy with these guys. Our health and safety was always put first and as such all 10 of us in the group made it to base camp and back without altitude sickness or requiring helicopter evacuation.
Garlic is good to help prevent altitude sickness so So Nam ensured we had garlic soup most days to help minimize the risk of getting it!
We could not fly over to Lukla for 2 days so lost time on our trek and being a basic trekking group we were running out of time to do the trek safely. However, Birendra explored every option possible to make sure we didn't miss out on doing this once-in-a-lifetime trek.
By the end of the trip, we were all very attached to all our guides and porters.
This was well organized and most importantly we all felt safe and could trust each of them. Would definitely recommend Adventure Club Trek to anyone!

    EBC and 3 passes

We booked a 21-day trek with Birendra. We contacted a number of trek companies and we were impressed with the comprehensive and speedy responses. The entire process was done via the internet and we found Birendra to be both honest and reliable. We did not do a lot of comparison pricing however the trek represented great value for money and I have no concerns as to the amount we paid.
The trek in February was at the end of winter, and one pass was impassable due to ice/snow.
The trekking was wonderful and the porters were excellent. We had an issue with the guide, however, Birendra sorted out the issues and was always available and there when needed.
Birendra went above and beyond what was expected and his personable and ever-helpful approach was much appreciated.
